bittersweet (adj.) happiness tinged with sadness or pain

autumn 2013.

my first autumn in portland, oregon. i wandered the street, falling in love with this beautiful city. “look at how gorgeous the colours of the leaves are!” i exclaimed with heart-shaped eyes to my friend.

to which, she said matter-of-factly, “that just means they are going to die soon. it’s their final breath of life…” soon enough, the leaves fell, leaving the tree naked, cold and sad.

autumn – an exuberant burst of joy and happiness, only to fade away in a few weeks, at the mercy of cold, harsh winter. not sure if i can ever trust autumn again…
